Center for Traditional Textiles

At the heart of Aracari is the desire to operate in a responsible, respectful and ethical manner in everything we do.

Since 1996 we have woven this approach into the development of every facet of our business. From only working with suppliers who have a similar ethos and care for their staff, to giving practical support to the communities we work in. Although undoubtedly altruistic – this reaps benefits for all.

For example, by having a strong connection to rainforest tribes we can ensure that our clients are ensured good wildlife viewings, as only the local people know where the abundant wildlife is. Where we treat our support staff such as trekking porters with kindness and appreciation, we are rewarded back tenfold with loyalty and an extra special service for our clients.

As Peruvians we pay more than just lip service to the many deserving causes in our locality. Needs are constantly shifting. They stretch across community support – for our porters home village of Patakancha nestled in the hills above Ollantaytambo and our amazing friend Mother Antonia whose mission feeds breakfast to up to 600 people in the village of Yanque in the Colca Canyon – to cultural support, such as the Center for Traditional Textiles in Cuzco, which we encourage our clients to visit and learn about local weaving techniques. We give donations to victims of environmental crisis, such as the Hacienda Arona on the Southern coast of Peru which was badly damaged in the 2007 earthquake. We are also deeply committed to heritage preservation and have taken concrete steps to support the preservation of Lima's architectural heritage with the restoration of a beautiful historic seventeenth century house in the Centre of Lima. Casa Prado, the home of the presidential Prado family for over two centuries, was listed as one of the top 100 most endangered sites 2008 by the World Monuments Fund and Marisol was personally involved in its restoration. Only by behaving in a responsible and respectful manner can you hope to gain from a truly authentic travel experience.

We are always on the lookout for new projects to support and different ways of chanelling ours and our clients' donations to worthwhile causes that we know are responsibly run by genuine actors in the world of both natural and cultural conservation. If you hear of worthwhile projects in Peru that you think would be suitable, please let us know by writing to us on This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
