Parque Nacional Huascaran
and Chavin Ruins

Parque Nacional Huascarán extends over 340.000 hectares to encompass substantially all of the Cordillera Blanca including Peru's highest peak - Huascarán, 6.768m - and more than 50 peaks in excess of 5.700 metres. It was created to protect and preserve the Cordillera Blanca's flora, fauna, archaeological sites and scenic beauty.

The area is also home of the 3.000 year - old Chavín culture, the first religious cult - noteworthy for its awesome imagery - to have spread across the Andes.

We suggest you allocate 4 days for a visit of this area. If you decide to trek, you should allocate at least 8.
We can design tailor -made itineraries to this and other destinations in Peru.

Practical Information for the Parque Nacional Huascaran Area

The area of Parque Nacional Huascaran, also called Huaraz Area, Cordillera Blanca, or Callejon de Huaylas is an area of stunning natural beauty. The mountain scenery here is exceptional and that is what makes it unique and much worth a visit. It is always compared to the beauty of the Himalayas around Annapurna in Nepal. What makes it special though that it is the highest mountain range situated in the tropics. It is one of the world's top climbing destinations.

For those not intending to trek, however, a visit to this area may mean way too much driving with limited rewards when compared to other destinations in Peru

Access is only overland, and a full days's drive is necessary to arrive from Lima (and a full day to return): north on the Panamerican Highway toward Trujillo (5 hours) and then approximately 4 hours up towards the town of Huaraz (3091m). Once at your hotel in Huaraz, more driving is necessary to go to Chavin de Huantar, the Llanganuco glacial lagoon or to most of the day-trips that are possible in the area.

If your objective is to trek or climb though, this is the place to come! Superb scenery and demanding terrain free of crowds, it is the Andes at its very best. We recommend three treks in the Cordillera Blanca Area. One of them, the Olleros to Chavin trek, has the incentive of taking you to the Pre Inca site of Chavin de Huantar, definitely worth a visit.
