Hacienda del Mar, Pearl Islands, Panama
Hacienda del Mar is probably the most exquisite and isolated upscale seaside
retreat in Spanish speaking Latin America. It consists of 14 carefully
appointed bungalows, built with local materials, simply but
tastefully decorated and commanding superb ocean views. All
rooms have ensuite bathrooms, fan, air conditioning and terrace.
The clubhouse houses a lounge terrace bar and restaurant. Lovely
pool overlooking the white sandy beach.
Hacienda del Mar is located in San Jose,
the second largest island in the Pearl Islands archipelago. The
Pearl Islands are located in the middle of the Gulf of Panama on
the Pacific Ocean, 90 kms away from Panama City.
There are excellent air cuonnections between, Lima
and Quito and Panama City on Copa Airlines, Panama's flagship airline
and an excellent one too. Once in Panama City, you will be assisted
to either take a private yacht (3 hours) or catch
a scheduled or charter flight to San Jose (20 minutes). There is
a compacted gravel airstrip, 1400 metres long and 90 metres wide
that provides maximum safety in air access.
Over 35 splendorous coral white, ebony black and
radiant gold beaches and coves surround San Jose, embedded between
the temperate and calm turquoise and blue waters of the Pacific
Ocean in the Gulf of Panama. A blanket of lush vegetation covers
the whole island's gentle sloping hills. The coastline is very irregular,
affording many anchorage locations.
The soil is extremely fertile and nourishes a wide
variety of vegetation including gallery forests with trees rising
20 metres and higher with occasional arboreal giants. Coconut palms
and wild sugar cane are found along the coastline. Many rivers and
springs, the main ones flowing steadily year-round, providing for
abundant pure fresh waters irrigates San Jose.
The dry season is between November and April, but
the weather is lovely year round and it is pleasant during
rainy season as well. The average daytime temperature is 28 degrees
C.
Activities at Hacienda del Mar
include diving, snorkeling and exploring the island beaches, but
fishing is particularly noteworthy.
The waters of San Jose abound in tropical game fish
and are considered among the best fishing grounds in the world.
Sixteen black marlin world records haver been conquered in these
waters. Sailfish, amberjack, bonito, wahoo, dolpin, corbin, red
snapper, tuna and mackarel, as well as marine turtle, shrimp and
giant oysters, clams and mussels make a paradise for fishermen and
divers.
