Christmas in Cuzco
A time of wonder and delight all over the World. Discover how Christmas Eve is spent in Cuzco where the 500 year traditional Santuranticuy or ‘sale of the saints' brings people together at the Plaza de Armas for a magical Christmas market. Niño Manuelito, or the Andean version of the baby Jesus, plays the lead role in this extravaganza. He and the other characters from the Christmas story are carved, hand-painted and sold in nativity sets by local people for local people and every household in Cuzco has one in pride of place. Live archaeology in Peru
Think Peru, think Incas. But did you know that Peru has the oldest archaeology in the New World? And it's happening right now. If that doesn't seem to make sense, take the discovery of ten ceremonial ‘Tumi' knives in Ferreñafe, near Chiclayo in Northern Peru just a few weeks ago – the first time archaeologists have discovered these beautiful knives in context. With at least eight different civilizations in situ in ancient Peru before the Inca civilization made its mark, there are excavations happening right now all over the country. Find out more about archaeology in action. December 2006
