The Galapagos Islands: a unique Ecosystem |
 |
The Galapagos Islands, an archipelago of 35 volcanic islands stretching over an area of 45,000 sq.km, on the Pacific Ocean near Ecuador, are one of the wonders of the natural world. They are a Unesco Heritage site since 1978. The Galapagos Islands are unique in that they preserve the habitat of many species that are only found here. Charles Darwin visited the islands in 1835, and his studies of what he found on here constituted the basis for his book “The Origin of the Species” that he wrote a couple of decades later.
The Galapagos Islands belong to Ecuador, and are a National Park since 1959. Tourism here is very much regulated, to preserve the natural habitat as pristine as possible. Land visits to the islands have to follow established trails and visitors must always be accompanied by their naturalist guides. Cruises are generally the best way to visit the Galapagos, giving you the chance of getting to know different islands which are far from each other, and whose geography and characteristics are very different. There are also diving-focused cruises, which visit Darwin and Wolf, two islands at the far north of the archipelago where the best underwater wildlife is found. For those preferring a land-based visit there are hotels in two of the main islands, San Cristobal and Santa Cruz, which provide day excursions by boat.

For a truly luxurious cruise experience, the option is the Integrity, a marvellous 141ft. fully stabilized motor-yacht customized to carry 16 passengers and 12 crew including a naturalist guide. The 9 cabins are all on the main desk and have bathroom facilities en suite, large picture windows as no other, individual climate control as well as an entertainment centre with Cd/Dvd and LCD monitor. In the second desk are the bar and lounge seating where meals are served and on the covered top deck, there are an outdoor spa, a bar with barbecue and comfortable chaise lounges where to relax and enjoy life on board.
If you prefer a land based experience, we suggest you try Infinite Blue Villa! This villa combines modern architecture with open-air living and dramatic sea views, and offers 3 beautifully appointed ocean view rooms and a casita, all with private areas and bathrooms. The villa’s amenities are plentiful, such as indoor and outdoor sofas, roof top dining, sun desk with sea side seating, Jacuzzi, wireless internet access, a complete library of Galapagos videos and books and so on. Cruises on the Integrity are 8-days and the boat is available for charters. Stays at Infinite Blue Villa are subject to a minimum 5-night stay and the Villa is only available for private bookings.
