Curated by Miguel A. López, with the participation of 13 artists, the exhibition takes a new look at the debate revolving around the main stereotypes in Peru today. The exhibition shows some of the processes that have taken place in Peru over the last few decades following the breakdown of the cultural isolation and the arrival of a somewhat tenuous democracy, which has been affected by a civil war; the consequences of a dictatorship, and where today there are apparently some signs of social stability and economic well-being. This new collective exhibition hosted by Tasneem Gallery, and sponsored by ARACARI, again reflects the Gallery´s profile to date, exploring questions related to ideas of identity, cultural fragmentation, post-colonialism, historical development and social integration strategies. The exhibition catalogue has two essays: one written by Miguel A. López and the other by the art critic Sharon Lerner who makes acommentary on the exhibition in the context of contemporary Peruvian art. The participating artists are: José Luis Martinat, Ishmael Randall Weeks, Eliana Otta, Harry Chavez, Pablo Patrucco, Natalia Revilla, Giuseppe Campuzano, Camila Rodrigo, José Vera Matos, Alfredo Márquez, Gilda Mantilla, Santiago Quintanilla y Juan Javier Salazar. Being that it underpins the company’s core objective, ARACARI is honoured to have the opportunity of supporting this very exciting initiative. NOTES ON THE CURATOR Miguel A. Lopez (Lima, 1983). He is a writer, curator and researcher. His texts have been published in magazines such as Afterall, ramona, The Exhibitionist, Third Text, Artecontexto, Papers d'Art, among others. He is co-author of Post-Illusions. New Visions. Art critic in Lima (1980-2006) (Lima, Wiese Foundation, 2006) and co-curator of the exhibitions: Subversive Practices. Art under Conditions of Political Repression. South America / Europe / 60s-80s (Stuttgart, WKV, 2009), The Persistence of the ephemeral. Origins of the Peruvian non-objectivity: Ambient / happenings / conceptual art (1965-1975) (Lima, CCE, 2007), among several others. He is an active member, since its founding in 2007, of the Conceptual Network of the South. As described by Miguel A. López: “EL PLACER ES MÁS IMPORTANTE QUE LA VICTORIA is thus a fragmentary and partial catalyst of those feverish levels of exaltation and tragedy: the unexpected coming together of the aesthetics of enjoyment and the signs of celebration, all this is in contrast with the gloomy allegories and melancholy of former days that still affect our society today. Some of the pieces, in a variety of ways, draw attention to and examine the possibilities of image and the body, replacing the military rhetoric with an air of enjoyment and fun. While others are clear reflections of the frenzy and decadence, but which can also be taken for the disrespect of a body which refuses to remain the same. The aesthetics are also symptoms of the social schizophrenia that involves moving simultaneously through landscapes of pleasure and disillusionment. Comisariada por Miguel A. López, y con la participación de trece artistas, propone una revisión de los debates en torno a tópicos neurálgicos en el Perú actual. La exposición apunta algunos de los procesos que se han generado en el país durante las dos últimas décadas tras el quiebre del aislamiento cultural y la llegada de una democracia algo retraída, permeada por una guerra civil, con las consecuencias de una dictadura, y donde aparentemente hoy ya se detectan algunos signos de estabilidad social y bienestar económico. Esta nueva propuesta colaborativa de Tasneem Gallery cuenta con el apoyo de ARACARI ; en ella vuelven a confluir las líneas de pensamiento que perfilan a la Galería, y se exploran cuestiones relacionadas a nociones de identidad, fragmentación cultural, lo poscolonial, el devenir histórico y las estrategias de integración social. La muestra está acompañada de un catálogo que contiene dos ensayos: uno escrito por Miguel A. López sobre la exposición y el otro de la autoría de la crítica de arte Sharon Lerner quien realiza un comentario sobre la exposición en el contexto del arte peruano contemporáneo. López describe: “EL PLACER ES MÁS IMPORTANTE QUE LA VICTORIA es así un catalizador fragmentario y parcial de esos niveles febriles de exaltación y tragedia: los encuentros inesperados entre las estéticas del goce y los signos de la celebración, todo ello en tensión con las alegorías fúnebres y las melancolías de tiempos pasados que siguen marcando nuestro presente. De distintos modos, algunas de estas piezas señalan y exploran las posibilidades de la imagen y del cuerpo, reemplazando las retóricas militares por los ámbitos del juego y la diversión. Mientras otras son claros rastros del desenfreno y la decadencia, pero que pueden ser leídas asimismo como formas de desacato de un cuerpo que se rehúsa a permanecer tal cual es. Estéticas que son también síntomas de la esquizofrenia social que significa transitar en simultáneo paisajes de placer y de desencanto.
