Refugio Amazonas is a thirty-two bedroom lodge, opened in 2005, located in a 120-hectare private reserve. It is an excellent option for introductory nature tours and the ideal stepping stone for longer explorations to the Tambopata Research Center. It is also the perfect choice for those traveling with children. The Refugio Amazonas offers the only attraction especially made for children,  in the Peruvian Amazon – the Children’s Rainforest Trail. There are also special programs for teens and soft adventures available.

Refugio Amazonas has been built using a combination of traditional native materials (wood, palm fronds, wild cane and clay) and architecture and modern day ecolodge technology. All bedrooms are private even if the side that looks out to the forest does not have a wall or screening of any kind, acting as a large window facing the forest. The rooms all have private bathrooms with hot water for warm showers and mosquito netting for beds. There is electricity in the common areas until 10pm with kerosene lamps and candles available for the night, and a 110V generator is turned on once a day to recharge batteries for guests or lodge facilities. It is an excellent option for introductory nature tours and the ideal stepping-stone for longer explorations to the Tambopata Research Center.

Access from Puerto Maldonado takes a total of 4 hours (1 hour by land and 3 hours by motorized canoe)
