Focus is fun for the whole family, including children aged 6 to 15 years old. We have selected assorted activities that are entertaining for everyone. Not all possible activities are described below. Additional options such as mountain biking can be substituted or added to the sample itinerary. Also, this itinerary can be shortened to cover only 1 week or 10 days.

Day 1    
Arrival Lima

Arrival in Lima from your evening international flight. You will be met by our representatives and transferred to to the Miraflores Park Hotel, a luxury high rise overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Overnight Miraflores Park Hotel.

Day 2    
Lima - Tambopata

You will be collected from your hotel and driven to the airport to take your morning flight to Puerto Maldonado. From Puerto Maldonado you will travel to the Refugio Amazonas. This 4-hour journey is comprised of 1 hour by land and 3 hours by motorized canoe. The Refugio Amazonas is an excellent option for introductory nature tours and the ideal stepping stone for longer explorations to the Tambopata Research Center. It is also the perfect choice for those traveling with children.

Day 3  
Tambopata

In the morning begin your journey up river to the only lodge located within the actual Tambopata Reserved Zone, the Tambopata Research Center. This lodge is a 10 minute walk from the Tambopata River, located 8 hours up river from the city of Puerto Maldonado (4 hours from the Refugio Amazonas). It features 18 bedrooms with shared bathrooms and is charming and intimate. It is one of the best spots for wildlife viewing in the Amazon basin. The largest known macaw clay lick is five hundred yards from the lodge and the combination with Refugio Amazonas allows you to experience the canopy tower and the oxbow lake.

Day 4    
Tambopata

Enjoy an adventure filled day including a visit to the Macaw clay lick where you’ll see dozens of large macaws and hundreds of parrots congregate on this large river bank in a raucous and colorful spectacle. You could also hike the Floodplain Trail, a 5k trails that covers the prototypical rain forest with immense trees crisscrossed by creeks and ponds.  Explore the lodge and its surroundings at your leisure.

Day 5    
Tambopata

Take a 3.5 hour boat ride back to the Refugio Amazonas and enjoy your final afternoon/evening in the Amazon. Visit “Don Manuel” who can give you rainforest tattoos – the kids will have a blast!

Day 6
Tambopata - Cuzco - Urubamba Valley

In the morning transfer by boat to the Tambopata River Port, and from there to the Puerto Maldando Airport to catch your flight to Cuzco. At the Cuzco airport you will be met by the Aracari representative and driver and transferred to your hotel in the Urubamba Valley. Spend the rest of the afternoon at leisure acclimatizing to the high altitude.

Day 7    
Urubamba Valley

In the morning the whole family can enjoy an easy 2 hour ride on delightful Peruvian Paso horses at the lovely Hacienda Huayo Ccari. Hacienda Huayo Ccari is a lovely traditional hacienda owned and lived-in by one of the oldest land-owning families in Cuzco. You will enjoy a delicious served three-course lunch in the hacienda’s elegant wood paneled dining room with views of the valley below.  After lunch the kids can enjoy a textile demonstration designed especially for them. This is a genuinely unique opportunity for your children to learn from one of the most accomplished weavers in Peru.  Nilda Callanaupa, head of the “Center for Traditional Textiles of Cuzco” NGO, will run a mini-workshop for the children where they will experience the complete process of backstrap weaving – from identifying the plants and minerals that provide the dyes, to dyeing the thread and even weaving simple designs themselves. While your children are having fun, you could spend some time looking at the superb pieces of the Hacienda’s folk art collection or enjoying the stunning garden views. Return to the hotel to relax for the evening.

Day 8
Huchuy Qosqo Trek: Tauca (3,750m/12,375ft) - Huchuy Qosqo (3,650m/12,045ft)

This is the most popular of the short treks we do, as it is quite easy, it covers very varied terrain and allows you to camp at a little-known Inca site, situated on a plateau with stunning views overlooking the valley and snow-capped peaks of the Vilcabamba range. It’s an excellent short trek for families! You will start your day by driving to Tauca, approximately 35 min. drive from your hotel in Urubamba in the direction of Chinchero. Here you will meet your crew and pack animals, and start your trek. This is a fully outfitted trek at the highest standard. You will need to carry nothing else than your camera and water bottle. Food is plentiful and made from fresh ingredients. Cooked breakfast and dinner, picnic lunch and morning and afternoon snacks with hot beverages. Tents will be pitched and ready when you arrive at your campsite. This trek is off the main tourist trail. Today you will walk a total of 5 hours (10km, 6.7mi).

Day 9    
Huchuy Qosqo Trek: Huchuy Qosqo - Lamay - Urubamba Valley Visit

Start your day with a nutritious cooked breakfast. Visit the site at your leisure and with your guide. After breakfast hike down from Huchuy Qosqo to the village of Lamay on the banks of the Urubamba Valley. This morning you will visit the fabulous ruins of Ollantaytambo, and its town. Enjoy a pottery lesson with the experts in Ollantaytambo. Try your hand at creating your own “masterpiece” under the guidance of one a skilled local. Using rich colours and traditional patterns you can create a vase, or a cup – a lasting original momento of your family trip to Peru. This is a fascinating and fun two hour session for all the family. Lunch at a local restaurant and return to your hotel.

Day 10    
1 day Inca Trail to Machu Picchu

You will be collected by your guide and driven to Ollantaytambo (30 min) at approximately 8:00am to take the Vistadome Trainto Aguas Calientes, the station that serves Machu Picchu. The total train ride is approximately 2 hours, mainly through wonderful cloud forest scenery. You will get off approximately 1 ½ hours before arrival at Aguas Calientes, and together with your guide, start your 1 day Inca trail. You will carry your daypack and box lunch only. You will cross a hanging bridge to then approach the small but interesting Inca archaeological complex of Cachabamba. After a brief visit of this site you will begin a three to four hours ascent to the ruins of Wiñay Wayna: an important Inca spiritual site, and one of the loveliest of all Inca ruins. At this point the trail joins with the main Inca Trail. From here you will be walking on Inca pavement. Here the Inca Trail cuts across the ridge above Machu Picchu to finally reach Intipunku or Gate of the Sun, from where the trail winds downhill into the lost citadel located right above the Urubamba River. You will then take a half hour bus ride down to your Hotel, the lovely Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel. Overnight Machu Picchu Pueblo.

Day 11    
Machu Picchu - Cuzco

Enjoy Machu Picchu almost all to yourself, as you will be able to access the site as soon as it opens, and watch the morning unfold. Machu Picchu at this time is pure magic. Full day at leisure.  Catch the last afternoon Vistadome Train from Machu Picchu to Cuzco, journey time is approximately 3.45 hours. At the train station you will be collected and driven to your hotel.

Day 12    
Adventure around Cuzco

Spend the day River Rafting on the Urubamba River. This is great fun for the whole family! Return to Cuzco in the late afternoon. Spend the evening relaxing or exploring the city at your own pace.

Day 13    
Cuzco : Half day tour

 

Start the day with a guided walking tour of Cuzco.  Start your visit by positioning yourself in the Main Square, observing the juxtaposition of Inca and Colonial architecture. You will walk through the City’s main streets with Inca stonework, and observe the finest of Spanish Colonial architecture. Some of the sights you will visit are the main highlights such as the Cathedral and the Sun Temple, but also some lesser-known ones as La Merced or San Francisco. Enjoy lunch at family-friendly “Pacha Papa” Restaurant. Afternoon at your leisure.

Day 14    
Cuzco - Lima

In the morning you will be collected at your hotel to transfer to the airport to catch your flight to Lima.  You will have a vehicle and driver at your disposal to go wherever in Lima you prefer. In the evening transfer to the airport to catch your international flight home. Or if doing the extension, overnight in Lima at the Miraflores Park Hotel

Day 15    
Lima - Chicama

Transfer to the airport to catch a morning flight to Trujillo. At the airport you will be collected and transferred 1.5 hours to the Chicama Surf Resort. We consider this resort an ideal choice for families as it offers a wide range activities for everyone. All ages enjoy the opportunity to surf in this some of the world’s most perfect waves.

Day 16    
Chicama Surf Camp

Spend the day taking surf lessons with some of Peru’s top surf instructors. If surfing is not your thing, horseback riding can be arranged as well tours of nearby archeological sites.  You can also simply enjoy a day of total relaxation on the beach.

Day 17    
Chicama - Lima

Spend the morning enjoying your final surf lesson. After lunch you will be collected at your hotel and transferred to the airport to catch your flight to Lima and connect to your evening international flight home.
