Highlights of Southern Peru

Focus is seeing the highlights and essentials while staying at the most sumptuous properties of Southern Peru. This itinerary allows you to see three of Peru’s most famous destinations in a relatively short timeframe. Because you are staying at strategically located lodgings, all of which are the best known in each location, your visits paced in a relaxed manner.

Day 1    
Arrival Lima

On arrival from your international flight, you will be collected by your English-speaking representative and driven to your hotel. After check-in you will enjoy a visit of Lima, covering pre Hispanic and colonial sites as well as the Museo Rafael Larco Herrera Museum in the company of one of Aracari’s erudite guides. Lunch at the Café del Museo (Museum Café). Cap off the evening with dinner at La Hauca, a Lima classic in a spectacular setting. La Huaca is built in the midst of some of the oldest archaeological remains in the Lima area, the Huaca Pucllana.  The atmosphere is cosmopolitan and intimate and the view from the verandah over the pyramids is impressive and takes you back in time.

Day 2    
Lima: Full Day Culinary Experience

Dedicate a full day to obtaining a privileged insight into what makes Peru’s current culinary scene so exciting. Our charismatic culinary interpreters will take you on a fascinating and educational journey through the fragrances and tastes of Peru. You will visit colorful markets, Lima’s most traditional Cevicheria, and enjoy a tasting menu at the widely recognized “Senorio de Sulco” restaurant. Overlooking the ocean, this restaurant offers a very good quality buffet lunch of creole food. A perfect way to savour the varied dishes from the different areas of Peru.  The afternoon will be spent enjoying a Pisco Tasting at the atmospheric “Bolivariano” tavern and restaurant finally enjoying a sweet ending to the tour with a sampling of Peru’s divine sweets (another important component of Peruvian cuisine).

Day 3  
Cuzco

In the morning transfer to the airport to catch your flight to Cuzco. At the Cuzco airport you will be met by our local Aracari representative and transferred to your hotel. Spend the morning at leisure to acclimatize to the high altitude. Meet your guide in the afternoon for a guided walking tour of Cuzco. You will start your visit by positioning yourself in the Main Square, observing the juxtaposition of Inca and Colonial architecture. Walk through the City’s main streets with Inca stonework, and observe the finest of Spanish Colonial architecture. Dinner at La Cicciolina.

Day 4    
Urubamba Valley - Cuzco

Transfer to the Urubamba Valley (1 hour drive). The Urubamba river valley is dotted with villages, markets and archaeological sites. You will visit the village and Inca site of Ollantaytambo, which boasts some of the finest Inca architecture known. Gourmet lunch at the lovely Hacienda Huayo Ccari, the private estate of one of Cuzco's oldest land owning families. Enjoy a unique textile demonstration and cocktails in the garden. After lunch visit the wonderful ruins of Pisac and its famous market. Afternoon return to Cuzco.

Day 5    
Machu Picchu

You will be collected by your guide and driven to the Poroy train station to take the Hiram Bingham luxury train to Aguas Calientes, the station that serves Machu Picchu. Train ride is approximately 3 hours through wonderful cloud forest scenery. You will be served brunch on board, and enjoy a very luxurious journey. Upon arrival in Machu Picchu, you will have a guided visit of the ruins together with other train passengers. Machu Picchu, also known as "The Lost City of the Incas" is one of the world's most celebrated archaeological sites and rightly so. Its location is spectacular. It is nestled in the Andean cloud forest on a high ridge straddling between two mountains with the Urubamba River curling like a snake below it. The mountain scenery surrounding it is magnificent and the site itself is also spectacular. After visiting the site with your guide, you will have the luxury of staying in the Citadel in relative solitude, since your hotel is the only one located right by the ruins.

Day 6
Machu Picchu - Cuzco

Enjoy Machu Picchu almost all to yourself, as you will be able to access the site as soon as it opens, and watch the morning unfold. Machu Picchu at this time is pure magic. All day at leisure in Machu Picchu. Catch the Hiram Bingham train back to Cuzco at 6:00pm. Pre-dinner cocktails will be served in the bar and afterwards a four-course, set menu dinner will be presented in the dining cars. The train will pull into Poroy station in Cuzco at 10pm and you will be driven back to your hotel (about 25 minutes drive).

Day 7    
Cuzco - Puno

Transfer to the train station to catch the Andean Explorer train to Puno. The journey takes approximately 10 hour and is one of the most famous train rides in South America. Lunch onboard the train. Transfer from the Puno train station to the spectacular Titilaka hotel and relax on the shores of Lake Titicaca for the rest of the evening.

Day 8
Puno

Select your favorite activities from a list of multiple half or full day visits to different island communities, kayaking, or hiking. You can also spend your day relaxing in this tranquil spot. This day can be whatever you make of it!

Day 9    
Puno - Colca

Morning departure to start an overland journey of approximately 7-9 hours (325 km) to the Colca. The drive will go through wonderful scenery and traditional towns, with the maximum altitude reached in Chuchura (4500m, 14,764ft). Part of the journey is by unpaved road (30%) and part by new paved road (70%). Arrive at the luxurious Casitas del Colca in time to relax and enjoy dinner.

Day 10    
Colca

Early morning drive to La Cruz del Condor, approximately 1 ½ hours away, to try and get a glimpse of the Condor in flight. Return to the lodge for lunch and for the rest of the afternoon you may rest and relax, enjoy a spa treatment or if colonial art is of interest to you, visit to one of the best preserved colonial churches.

Day 11    
Colca - Arequipa - Lima

Drive to Arequipa. In the afternoon, you will enjoy guided visits of the highlights of the city such as the Museo Santuarios Andinos where Inca frozen mummies are kept, the wonderful 16th century Santa Catalina Convent and the new Colonial Art Museum in the Convent of Santa Teresa.  Catch an afternoon return flight to Lima and transfer to your hotel.

Day 12    
“Insider” Lima

Enjoy a Full day of unstructured visits with an “Aracari insider”. A typical day could involve browsing around shops, art galleries or folk art collections, stopping by for coffee at a locally frequented spot and perhaps even going to a museum or exhibition. You will have a vehicle, “insider” and driver at your disposal to go wherever you prefer. Lunch is included at the Casa Garcia Alvarado, a Republican Mansion built in 1912 located in the heart of Miraflores.  Still lived-in by its owners, Mrs. Ana Maria Garcia Alvarado or her daughter will host you. You will have a vehicle and driver at your disposal to go wherever you prefer. Transfer to the airport to catch our evening international flight.
