Olleros to Chavin Trek

4 days/3 nights.
Grade: Moderate/Hard.
Highlight: Mountain scenery, pre-Inca archaeology.

This is a relatively little known trek in this area. It combines scenic and archaeological attractions,  the latter being an unusual feature of treks in this area. The scenery is stunning and varied, going from high altitude savannah or Puna grasslands at an altitude of 4000m, to the lush valleys typical of the eastern slopes of the Andes. A fair amount of time is spent trekking on Inca pavement. Arriving at the Pre Inca site of Chavin the Huantar (1000bC) is a major highlight of this trek.

Day 1

After a 1.5 hour drive from Huaraz to Olleros, trek to Laguna Collotacocha. Total 5 hours trekking.

Day 2

Total 7 hours trekking including high pass at Punta Yanshallash (4700m).

Day 3

Total 4 hours trekking before a visit to the ruins of Chavin de Huantar and onsite museum. Overnight in Hotel.

Day 4

A morning at the ruins followed by return to Huaraz, 3 hour transfer.
