For those wanting to approach Machu Picchu by foot, and not with the usual crowds approaching this magic site by train and bus, this is the perfect option. You get off the train half an hour before arriving in Aguas Calientes (the station that serves Machu Picchu). A total of 5 hours of hiking until you reach the ruins. Most of the way is uphill and with a fair number of precipices. You will visit the fabulous ruins of Winay Wayna, a stunning Inca site only second to Machu Picchu which is approachable only on foot when doing the Inca Trail.
