Finding action and adventure is easy when you’re in Peru. From horseback riding to cycling, mountain trekking to surfing; there’s something for everyone to enjoy. In fact, there are so many adrenaline-pumping activities to experience; we couldn’t possibly include them all in one blog post. So here’s part one in a new series covering the best active experiences in Peru.

If you love cycling, trekking and surfing, read on!

The best active experiences in Peru

Cycling through the Sacred Valley

An 8-hour cycle tour is the perfect way to see the Sacred Valley. Equipped with mountain bikes and all the safety gear you’ll need, take in the majestic views of the Andes as you cycle through fields and villages. This guide-led tour can be completely customized to your level of fitness and even adapted on the day. Feeling especially fit? You can ride all the way to Urubamba if you wish!

A moderate level of physical fitness is required for this activity. It is suitable for all ages and all cycling equipment is provided. A picnic lunch in a peaceful location is included at the halfway point to fuel you for the rest of the ride.

Riding the Rapids at Chuquicahuana

Whitewater rafting is one of those heart-thumping activities you will never forget. This 8-hour excursion takes you from Cusco to Chuquicahauna where you’ll spend two hours on the river. The river flows gently initially and this is where you’ll practice your maneuvers, but soon the real fun begins on the rapids in a beautiful canyon. Don’t worry if you don’t have time to take in the views; a full picnic lunch is provided when you’re back on land, providing ample time to enjoy the scenery.

Little experience is needed to enjoy this thrilling adventure and you’ll be thoroughly briefed before climbing aboard the boat.

Via Ferrata and Ziplining, Cusco

Mountain climbing in the Sacred Valley may sound like something only experience climbers can experience but anyone can enjoy this next activity…

A via ferrata (Italian for ‘iron path’) is a series of metal ladders, bridges and steps that allows people without climbing experience to move through the mountains. Using this system, one can climb very high or extremely vertical sections of a mountain – sections usually only accessible to experienced rock climbers.

It is perfectly safe because you are attached to a steel cable and led by an experienced guide, but it provides the adrenaline rush – and views – of real climbing.

It is suitable for those in good health and with reasonable fitness (and a good head for heights). The minimum age is 8 years old so it’s a great family activity.

Once you’ve climbed the mountain, you need to get back down. This is where the next activity comes in. The Sacred Valley has a system of seven zip lines, measuring from 150 meters (492 feet) to 700 meters (2296 feet) in length. Starting with an easy line you’ll fly back down the mountain, upping the difficulty and your skill as you descend.

These activities can be combined or if you fancy one but not the other, that can be arranged too; talk to your Aracari travel consultant to build your ideal itinerary.

Salkantay Trek, Cusco

Trekking to Machu Picchu is on many people’s bucket list. The Salkantay Trek is the second most popular route to Machu Picchu and equally as beautiful but far less crowded than the Inca Trail.

Take a multi-day trek along this route with Aracari and stay in comfortable lodges each night. In just six days you’ll experience breathtaking scenery as you pass beneath the snow covered peak of Salkantay, traverse through tropical jungles teeming with wildlife, and witness ancient cultures in remote villages. No wonder this trek is considered one of the best in the world by National Geographic Adventure Travel Magazine.

Surf’s Up, Lima

Lima offers some of the best surf in the world. Whatever your experience level, you’re guaranteed great waves here.

If you’re a complete novice, surf classes are available right in Lima. The waves are gentle, the teachers are excellent and there’s plenty of chill-out space if you just want to watch. All the equipment is provided; all you need to bring is a willingness to learn!

If you’re an experienced surfer you can find more powerful waves in and around Lima. The closest big wave is a 15-20 minute drive from Miraflores at La Herradura. Further afield at Pico Alto, you can find the biggest wave in South America, with waves breaking at 6 to 9 meters (20 – 30 feet) high on a good day! For advice on the best waves for your skill level, talk to an Aracari travel consultant.
