Conscious Travel: How Aracari Is Supporting “Peruanos Sin Agua”, Aracari Travel

Our low impact, tailor-made trips are designed to benefit, protect and preserve the communities we visit whilst also respecting the natural world around us.

We are also supportive of Peruvian non-profit organizations, using our close relationship with local communities and suppliers to support a variety of projects. That’s why we are so thrilled to be able to support Peruanos Sin Agua (Peruvians without Water) through our latest collaboration with Fluye water bottles.

 

Conscious travel and sustainable tourism: Our rules.

Every Aracari traveler receives a welcome pack. This special pack consists of a tote bag made by Peruvian artists from Andean jute fiber and wool pom poms. Inside the tote bag guests will find a stylish, reusable water bottle. This bottle keeps hot drinks hot for 12 hours and cold drinks cool for 24 hours. It’s the perfect sustainable travel accessory and we hope it will help you refuse plastic water bottles whilst on holiday and at home.

But these bottles aren’t just eco-friendly. No, this unassuming accessory directly helps to provide people on the outskirts of Lima with fresh water. This is because 7% of the money we give to Fluye for the bottles goes to support Peruanos Sin Agua (Peruvians without Water).

Our all new plastic-free water bottles are designed and made by Fluye (which means ‘flow’ in English), a company based in Peru. Fluye was founded in 2017 as a direct response to the vast quantities of plastic bottles used in South America. 50 million plastic bottles are used every year, and only 20% of these are recycled or reused. Fluye’s plastic-free design is a durable, long-lasting and beautiful alternative. Fluye collaborate with nationally and internationally recognized artists to develop exclusive designs for their bottles so they look good and they do good.

Peruanos Sin Agua (Peruvians without Water)

Peruanos Sin Agua (Peruvians with Water) is an award-winning NGO bringing sustainable fresh water access to tens of thousands of Peruvians every day.

In Lima, more than two million Peruvians live without access to drinking water or safe drainage systems. One million Peruvians live in desperate conditions, exposed to contaminated water and illness.

In 2005, a dedicated group of socially responsible individuals organized a movement to get the attention of local authorities and find a solution to this problem. Peruanos Sin Agua (Peruvians without Water) has since provided fresh water access to 60,000 people. In 2015 the NGO won 1st Place in the National Environmental Prize in the Eco-efficiency category.

The majority of Peruvians live in desert regions, where there is a great deal of fog but running water is almost impossible to find. Peruanos Sin Agua (Peruvians without Water) devised an innovative solution to this problem; they installed fog catchers in desert communities to turn this pervasive fog into fresh water.

One fog catcher is able to produce up to 400 liters of water per day. But how do they work? A plastic mesh is placed in a strategic location. The mesh net traps atmospheric vapor (fog droplets) and the micro droplets run down the net into a series of pipes and tanks. The water collected can be used for domestic and productive purposes. In one community, 60 nets provide free water to 250 families. Each community that receives these fog catchers helps with the maintenance of the nets.

The water produced helps very poor communities become self-sustainable because it allows locals to irrigate bio-gardens and engage in agriculture and cattle farming.

Aracari is proud to support such an important cause through our collaboration with Fluye. 7% of the money we pay to Fluye goes directly to Peruanos Sin Agua (Peruvians without Water) to fund water initiatives.
