Tipon trek is a half day walk that takes you to the little-known Inca complex of Tipon, forty minutes southeast of Cusco. The location is superb with stupendous views of the mountains and valley. In total, the Tipon Trek covers 4km (2.5mi) and lasts approximately two to three hours. It is a perfect opportunity for acclimatisation before a longer trek or simply to escape into the countryside. Aracari arranges the Tipon trek on a private basis only, not as a group tour. The trek can only be booked as part of a tailormade trip to Peru, not on a standalone basis.

Tipon Trek Itinerary

Leave Cusco by car to start your trek to Tipon. Tipon consists of a vast, walled enclosure with complex Inca drains, water works and baths, some of which are still functioning. About a one to one and a half hour uphill trek from the enclosure will bring you to a magnificent Inca aqueduct. Take some time to explore the aqueduct before heading back down to the archaeological site.  Enjoy a picnic lunch at the site before transferring back to your hotel.

Alternative Short Hikes in the Sacred Valley

This hike takes only half a day, so can easily be combined with a visit to Cusco. An alternative gentle half-day hike that’s well suited to families is the Chincerho to Huayllabamba trek; you might also like to consider the light hike to Pumamarca Ruins, a hillside Inca fortress in the Sacred Valley.

If you’re acclimatized and looking for full day hikes, then consider the one-day inca trail to Machu Picchu or the challenging Patabamba to Huchuy Qosqo full day hike.
