Travel to South America in July

Peak dry season and crisp Andean skies

July is one of the most sought-after months to explore the Andes, with dry, sunny days, vivid blue skies, and cool nights — ideal for trekking, photography, and cultural immersion.

In Peru, conditions are perfect for visiting Cusco, the Sacred Valley, and Machu Picchu, or for venturing into the Cordillera Blanca for high-altitude hikes. Bolivia’s highlands, from the serene islands of Lake Titicaca to the whitewashed streets of Sucre, bask in brilliant sunshine. In Ecuador, the highlands enjoy some of the year’s clearest volcano views, and local festivals such as the Yamor celebrations in Otavalo begin to take shape toward month’s end.

In the Galápagos, the cool, nutrient-rich Humboldt Current is in full flow, drawing schools of fish, penguins, and diving seabirds close to shore. Waved albatross continue nesting on Española, blue-footed boobies raise chicks, and sea lions are active along the beaches.

The Amazon sees lower water levels, making jungle trails more accessible and revealing more riverbank wildlife — from basking caimans to giant river otters. Brazil’s Pantanal is at the height of its dry season, with exceptional jaguar, giant anteater, and bird sightings, while further north, Lençóis Maranhenses is at its most spectacular — vast dunes dotted with turquoise lagoons formed by the seasonal rains.

On Colombia’s Caribbean coast, sunny weather holds, making it an excellent time for combining Cartagena’s history with the beaches of the Rosario Islands. Chile’s and Argentina’s wine valleys enjoy mild, dry winter days, while Patagonia’s snow-covered landscapes are ideal for winter photography and quiet exploration in select areas.
