What does Aracari do?
Aracari is a pioneer of high-end, sustainable travel in South America. Founded in Peru in 1997, we specialize in crafting bespoke, private journeys across Peru, Bolivia, Chile, Ecuador, the Galápagos, Argentina, and beyond. Every trip is tailormade and designed around your interests, time, and style of travel. Our expert team arranges all logistics — from guides, transfers, and hotels to exclusive access, private experiences, and specialist-led activities.
When is the best time to travel?
South America offers something remarkable every month of the year. In Peru, the dry season (May–October) is ideal for exploring the Andes and Machu Picchu, while the green season (December–March) brings lush landscapes and fewer crowds. In Patagonia, the best weather falls between November and March; the Galápagos are fascinating year-round, though wildlife activity varies by month; and Antarctica is accessible only during the austral summer (November–March).
For a deeper look at seasonal highlights, visit our Travel by Month section — or speak with our team, who will tailor your itinerary to the best conditions for your journey.
How do I get to South America?
Most international flights arrive via major hubs such as Lima, Santiago, Buenos Aires, Bogotá, or Quito. From North America and Europe, there are frequent direct flights with leading airlines. Our team will advise you on the best international connections and coordinate any domestic or regional flights within your itinerary for seamless travel.
Do you arrange international airfare?
Aracari specializes in private, ground-based travel design — including domestic and regional flights across South America. While we don’t issue international tickets, we’ll gladly advise on the most suitable routes, airlines, and schedules to complement your custom itinerary.
Do I need a visa?
Visa requirements depend on your nationality and the countries you plan to visit. Citizens of the US, UK, Canada, and most EU nations generally do not require visas for tourism in Peru, Chile, Argentina, or Ecuador. A visa is required for Bolivia for US citizens and some other nationalities. Our expert team will provide current advice and any necessary documentation to support your visa application.
Do you arrange trips for solo travelers?
Yes. Every Aracari journey is private and tailor-made — ideal for solo travelers seeking flexibility, privacy, and personal attention. Whether you wish to travel independently or be guided throughout, we’ll design an itinerary that perfectly matches your pace and interests.
Do you arrange group or join-in tours?
Aracari exclusively designs private journeys and does not offer join-in group tours. However, we occasionally curate special, one-off group departures led by experts or our founder — such as cultural or conservation-focused expeditions. If you’re traveling with family, friends, or a specialist organization, our team can design a private group experience entirely tailored to you.
How do I book and pay?
Every itinerary on our website is an example — your journey will be crafted from scratch around your preferences. Once your itinerary is confirmed, we accept payments via bank transfer or credit card (Visa, Mastercard, or Amex). Depending on timing, a deposit may be required to secure arrangements. Our travel designers will guide you through each step of the booking process.
Do I need vaccinations or special health precautions?
We recommend consulting your healthcare provider well in advance of travel for the most up-to-date advice. A yellow fever vaccination is recommended for rainforest regions in Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador, and Brazil. Malaria medication may also be suggested for certain areas.
Altitude can affect travelers in highland regions such as Cusco, La Paz, or Quito. Our itineraries are carefully designed to allow for gradual acclimatization. Your travel designer will also share local recommendations and natural remedies to minimize discomfort.
Do I need travel insurance?
We strongly recommend comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical emergencies, trip cancellations, and evacuation in remote areas. For specific experiences, such as multi-day treks or expedition cruises, proof of medical and evacuation coverage may be required.
How do I get around in South America?
Aracari’s journeys include all private transfers and expert drivers throughout. While car rental is possible in some countries, it’s not recommended for most travelers due to differing road conditions and signage. We handle all logistics — from private vehicles to luxury trains, charter flights, and cruises — so your journey is seamless and worry-free.
What currency will I need?
Each country operates with its own currency: the Sol in Peru, the Boliviano in Bolivia, the Peso in Chile, Argentina, and Colombia, and the US Dollar in Ecuador and the Galápagos. US Dollars are widely accepted at upscale hotels and shops in major cities. We recommend carrying local currency for smaller purchases. ATMs are widely available, and credit cards (particularly Visa and Mastercard) are accepted in most places. Our team will advise you on currency use and exchange options prior to travel.
What should I pack?
Given South America’s diverse geography, we recommend packing layers for shifting climates. Lightweight clothing for coastal and jungle regions, warmer layers for the Andes, and comfortable walking shoes for exploring are essential. Once your itinerary is confirmed, your travel designer will provide a detailed, destination-specific packing list tailored to your activities and travel season.
How much should I tip?
Tipping is discretionary but appreciated. As a general guide:
- Private guide: USD $20–$40 per day
- Driver: USD $10–$20 per day
- Trekking staff (cook or porter): USD $5–$10 per day
In restaurants, a 10% tip is customary. All Aracari guides and drivers are compensated fairly, so tipping is never obligatory. Your travel designer will provide country-specific guidance before your trip.
Will my mobile phone work while traveling?
Mobile coverage is generally reliable in major cities and towns, with patchier service in remote areas. Most international phones work across South America with roaming plans. If your phone is unlocked, local SIM cards or eSIMs can easily be arranged. In Peru, Aracari provides guests with a local phone for calls during their stay, and similar solutions can be coordinated elsewhere on request.
Do you provide local support during travel?
Yes. Aracari’s team is based in Peru, with trusted partners across South America. We provide 24-hour assistance throughout your journey, ensuring expert, on-the-ground support wherever you travel.
What is an Aracari?
An Aracari is a small, brightly colored toucan native to the tropical forests of South America. Its playful, curious nature reflects our approach to travel: vibrant, inquisitive, and deeply connected to this continent.
