5 Reasons to Visit Peru in February

5 Reasons to Visit Peru in February, Aracari Travel

Peru is a year-round destination with something exciting to see and do every month of the year.

Many travelers think they should avoid Peru in February because it’s the rainy season, but Peru is a diverse country and the climate varies across the region. In the north – where all the best beach resorts are – it’s actually beautifully warm and sunny in February.

Regardless of the weather, February is a brilliant time to visit Peru. Here are five reasons why:

1. The Candelaria Festival

The Candelaria Festival is a religious celebration bringing together the catholic faith and Andean religion. It is a colourful affair full of culture, costumes, dance and music. It takes place in the Lake Titicaca area, with Puno being the main hub of festivities.

The festival starts on February 2nd with a procession. In the 18 days that follow, the party continues with folk music, fireworks and dance competitions.

2. The Coast is Perfect

As mentioned above, the weather is perfect for a beach trip in February. In the north, days are warm, sunny and there is very little rain. This region includes the fabulous beach resort Mancora, Peru’s capital city Lima, Trujillo, Paracas and Arequipa.

You can create an itinerary that combines long lazy days at the beach with the culture and energy of Lima and Trujillo. Lima is home to several of the world’s best restaurants, so it’s perfect for foodies too.

3. Fewer Tourists at Machu Picchu

If you don’t mind a bit of rain, February is the best time to visit Machu Picchu. Why? Because it is much quieter at this time of year. With fewer tourists you can take in the majesty of the ruins at your leisure; though do bear in mind it will be challenging and muddy if you decide to trek.

Note: the Inca Trail is closed throughout February but there are alternate trekking routes available. We can help build those into an itinerary for you.

4. The Romance of Valentine’s Day

For a romantic Valentine’s Day, look no further than Peru. Valentine’s Day is all about romantic hideaways, chocolate, and fine-dining and Peru delivers on all fronts there.

Central, in Lima was recently voted the 6th best restaurant in the world, so it’s the perfect spot for a romantic dinner.

As described in our Romantic Experiences in Peru story, Peru is no short of romantic hideaways, and two of our favourite ones are perfect in  February: Delfin I cruise on the Amazon, and  Kichic at Mancora Beach.

Peruvian chocolate is considered to be amongst the finest in the world, and you can see how it’s made (and even make some yourself) at ChocoMuseo in Cusco.

5. The Carnival in Cajamarca

Carnival usually falls in late February or early March. It’s held in the week before Lent with celebrations taking place all over Peru.

Carnival in Cajamarca is the biggest and liveliest carnival celebration. It attracts as many as 60,000 visitors from all over the world so it’s loud, wild and chaotic (in the best possible way).

Carnival is essentially a huge street party, with parades, feasting, music, dancing and water fights. Water fights are an important tradition of carnival, so expect to get wet.

If you would like to visit Peru in February, Aracari can help you create the ultimate itinerary for this time of year. Whether on honeymoon, seeking adventure, or you just want to experience the culture, February is the perfect time to visit Peru.
